? Only 0.56 seconds separated Lawrence’s Michael Andrew from a spot on the U.S. Olympic swim team Monday.

Andrew, 17, finished fourth in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 59.82 seconds at CenturyLink Center, which broke his own national age-group record. Only the top two finishers earn spots to the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which begins in August.

Kevin Cordes won the event in 59.18 seconds, and Cody Miller was runner-up in 59.26.

Andrew, who is home-schooled, is expected to compete in four more events this week, including the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle on Thursday. He is seeded 12th in the 200 IM.

Lawrence High graduate Emma Reaney took 13th in the women’s 100 breaststroke semifinals in 1:08.40, missing out on a spot in the finals by 0.80 seconds. She qualified for the semifinals by placing 13th during prelims Monday morning.

Reaney is expected to swim in the 200 individual medley today, seeded 37th in the event.

Former Free State High standout Courtney Caldwell, swimming in her first event at the Olympic Trials, placed 35th in the women’s 100 backstroke in 1:02.11.
