100 years ago: Soldiers battle rain, high winds at Fort Riley training camp

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 26, 1916:

  • “The Kansas National Guard had its first battle early today. The enemy was wind and rain, and, true to the military annals of the state, the troops came through victorious, although somewhat wet and muddy. The rainfall was three-fourths of an inch. The wind was sufficiently strong enough to cause one ‘dough boy’ of the First regiment to remark: ‘It wrapped me up in my “pup” tent, sent me rolling down a hill and landed me up against a tree. But, shucks, it was good fun and just a taste of the discomforts we may expect on the border.’ Many tents were blown down but no one was injured…. Despite the mud, the troops are drilling by companies today, continuing the ‘hardening’ work that started immediately after they had reached camp. This will continue until recruits leave for the border.”
  • “Late Saturday evening, the officers in charge of the recruiting stations for Company H, Company M and the supply company received word to report for duty at Fort Riley at the earliest possible moment. The following morning at 9:40 o’clock, the last of the Lawrence boys in the National Guard joined their regiment…. Sunday saw a number of Lawrence people in Fort Riley. Several went by train and others went in motor cars. Wherever they went they found home boys glad to see them. The spirit in the camp was excellent and the boys were getting into form for border service. The impression brought back from the camp was that it would likely be a week before the Kansas boys would be sent to the border but they are hoping it will be earlier than that…. Company M is giving the other members of the camp a real taste of college spirit. The ‘Rock chalk’ yell is frequently heard and a spirited but friendly rivalry is noted between the University boys and the Aggie Company I, whose camp adjoins that of M…. ‘Jayhawk’ is the appropriate name of the Company M mascot. Jayhawk is a white Spitz dog, blind in one eye, which was bought from a bystander at Topeka for $2.05…. Jayhawk wears a K. U. armband around his neck and is the particular friend of Wint Smith, whom he has adopted for his guardian…. The Second regiment was mustered in first and the boys of the Second had considerable fun over it. ‘Don’t fool with us,’ they told the boys of the First, awaiting their turn to be mustered in. ‘We’re regulars now and mean men to handle.'”
  • “Topeka. – Roy Robinson, 20 years old, a private in Battery A of the Kansas National Guard, shot and killed himself at his home here early this morning. Robinson is reported to have told friends that he would rather die than go to Mexico with the battery. He did not report Friday when Battery A left for Fort Riley.”
  • “The annual summer picnic of the Baptist church and Sunday school will be held Thursday afternoon on the university campus, near Snow Hall, beginning at 3 o’clock and with supper at 6:30. All members of the church and congregation are expected to come with well-filled baskets and with a knife, fork, spoon and cup for each one.”
