Wednesday’s 103-degree high sets Lawrence record

The 103-degree temperature recorded Wednesday afternoon at the Lawrence Municipal Airport established a record for June 22.

Emily Heller, of the National Weather Service in Topeka, said Wednesday’s high temperature broke the record of 97 degrees, which was established in 2009. She noted, however, that temperature records for Lawrence only extend back to 1996.

The good news is the heat is forecast to back off with the passage late Wednesday of a front through northeast Kansas, Heller said. Thursday’s temperatures should top out in the lower 90s, and thermometers are not expected to climb above the mid-90s through the next week. There is also a chance of showers every day through Tuesday.

“Tomorrow should be a much more pleasant day,” Heller said. “It looks like we are out of the heat advisory for the next week.”
