40 years ago: Crews burn brush for K-10 expansion; SWB installs ‘modular connectors’ in Lawrence apartments

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 17, 1976:

  • Road crews working on a four-lane extension of K-10 near Eudora caused some worry among Eudora residents this morning by starting controlled burns. Smoke from the brush fires darkened the skies, causing one resident to say, “Why, I thought we were going to have a tornado…. It would clear up, and then it would get real dark. I wasn’t sure what was going on.”
  • Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. workers began this week installing “modular connectors” on phones in Lawrence apartments. According to Bill Collinson, Lawrence manager for Southwestern Bell, the connectors were “not exactly like a jack,” but were designed to make installation and removal of phones more efficient. The company was planning to convert 20 percent of the city’s dwelling units to the system by the end of summer, Collinson said.
