Muddy water flowing in streets south of KU campus after water main break

Muddy water from a water main break at the Kansas University campus flows down Indiana Street into the intersection at 17th Street, Tuesday, June 14, 2016.

Construction crews struck an existing waterline while working to build a new waterline Tuesday morning, causing large amounts of muddy water to flow through the streets of neighborhood just south of the Kansas University campus.

Crews working to replace a waterline along Sunnyside Avenue between Louisiana Street and Sunflower Road struck the existing waterline, city spokeswoman Megan Gilliland said.

The water main break has not left any residents without water service, she said. The city also is not having to reroute any traffic since the area already had detours in place to accommodate the original construction.

But since the water main break occurred in an area already under construction, the flowing water is going through a dirt laden area and producing lots of muddy water on adjacent streets.

Gilliland said a timeline for the break to be repaired isn’t yet known, but crews are currently working to repair the line.
