$10,000 grant will help outfit new KU Student Veteran Center

Kansas University is getting a $10,000 outside boost to help furnish its new Student Veteran Center, scheduled to open in Summerfield Hall in January 2017.

Student Veterans of America and The Home Depot Foundation awarded KU a grant in the amount of $9,821 for the project, KU announced Tuesday. The grant is part of the Student Veterans of America’s Vet Center Initiative, which offers campus chapters across the country a chance to compete for money to build or renovate a veteran center.

The KU chapter’s application was one of 50 chosen to receive such a grant this year, according to KU.

“I applaud our KU Student Veterans of America chapter leadership and members for their work to help our campus receive this grant,” April Blackmon Strange, Student Veteran Center and SVA adviser, said in KU’s news release. “Thanks to their efforts, our center will become a more inviting space for military-connected students.”

The KU Student Veteran Center, envisioned as a one-stop-shop for VA benefits and other services, will include a lounge, meeting and tutoring rooms.
