Letter to the editor: Wishes, needs

To the editor:

The July 13 front-page headline read “Commissioners, public criticize proposed budget cuts.” Lawrence seems to be a city which is unable to differentiate between a “want” and a “need.” Need I say more? We hired Tom MarKus to do a tough job. I’m glad he has the guts to tackle difficult issues. I support him!

The front page article on July 14 was, “Citizens’ park, rec wish list revealed.” If I recall correctly, in the early ’90s, a 1/4-cent sales tax was put in place for parks and recreation, which is still in place. If the money isn’t there, then it can’t be done. Wishes are not needs!
