Criminal charges filed several months after two KU football players were arrested

Several months after a pair of Kansas University football players were arrested, the two men were charged with a crime.

In the early-morning hours of Feb. 19, police responded to a report of a robbery outside Jayhawker Towers, 1603 W. 15th St., said KU Public Safety Capt. James Anguiano. There, a man said two men robbed him of $40.

The two suspects, later identified as Eric Deon Rivers, 21, and Kendall Nyear Duckworth, 19, were soon arrested, but criminal charges were not filed against them until months later.

The man was not injured during the alleged robbery and said neither Rivers nor Duckworth was armed, Anguiano said.

Rivers was also held in the jail in February on suspicion of a Feb. 20 incident at Jayhawker Towers where he was accused of touching a female KU student inappropriately and attempting to remove her clothing without her consent, Anguiano said.

According to Douglas County Jail booking logs, Rivers and Duckworth turned themselves in to police on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Criminal charges were filed against them on June 1, according to criminal complaints filed in Douglas County District Court. The men each face one count of misdemeanor theft.

No charges have been filed against Rivers in Douglas County District Court regarding the reported Feb. 20 incident.

KU’s head football coach, David Beaty said on Feb. 22 that Rivers had been dismissed from the team and that Duckworth had been suspended.

According to a financial affidavit, Rivers has moved to Texas.

As of Tuesday, Duckworth, a linebacker, was listed on KU’s official football team roster.
