Firefighters start rolling up hoses used to battle a fire Sunday morning at 792 North 1851 Diagonal Road southeast of Lecompton as smoke from the still smoldering home rises in the background. Lecompton Township Rural Fire Department Chief Will Shockley said a male resident was able to get out of the house and had left the scene before his department arrived.

A Sunday morning fire destroyed a home in a rural area southeast of Lecompton.

Lecompton Township Rural Fire Department Chief Will Shockley said his department was called to a fire at 6:44 a.m. Sunday at 792 North 1851 Diagonal Road. Shockley said units from the department arrived at 6:52 a.m. to find the two-story wood frame house engulfed in flames. Despite getting water on the fire before 7 a.m., the structure was completely destroyed by the fire, the chief said.

A male resident of the house was home at the time the fire started, Shockley said. He was able to escape from the house and left the property before firefighters arrived, Shockley said. He did not know the name or the condition of the resident.

According to Douglas County property records, the property is owned by Norman Daniels.

Tankers from all Douglas County fire departments were called in to help fight the fire, Shockley said. The report from Douglas County Emergency Dispatch was that the fire started in the kitchen of the home, Shockley said.

No firefighters were injured while fighting the fire, Shockley said. The investigation into the fire continues. Shockley said he did not know the value of the loss.
