City swimmer fails to reach two Trials finals

? Lawrence swimmer Michael Andrew scratched out of one final at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials on Friday at CenturyLink Center, then failed to advance out of the semifinals in two other events.

Andrew was seeded sixth for the finals of the men’s 200-meter individual medley that was held Friday night, but he scratched out of the loaded event to focus on his other swims. The top two places — and Olympic berths — in the 200 IM went to Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.

Friday morning, the 17-year-old Andrew advanced to the semifinals of both the 50 free and the 100 fly.

In Friday night’s semifinals, Andrew placed 11th in the 50 free in 22.22 and 15th in the 100 fly in 53.63. Only the top eight advanced to the finals.
