Plea hearing for man accused of stabbing his wife at Super 8 rescheduled due to language barrier

A plea hearing for a Shawnee man accused of stabbing his wife twice was pushed on Friday to February because of a language barrier.

Navinkumar Patel, 46, was arrested in late June of 2015. He is accused of stabbing his wife in the abdomen at Lawrence’s Super 8 motel, 515 McDonald Drive, which he owns. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Patel’s wife was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with 2-centimeter stab wounds, according to an affidavit in the case. She was later released from the hospital.

In previous court appearances Patel, a native of India, needed an interpreter to translate what was said in court.

Friday afternoon a translator was not available, requiring Patel’s plea hearing to be rescheduled, said Douglas County District Judge Robert Fairchild. The hearing is now scheduled for 4 p.m. on Feb. 12.
