Minutes crunch: Bill Self again relies on veterans

Ames, Iowa ? Kansas basketball coach Bill Self, who has shortened his rotation the last two games, had eight Jayhawks play six or more minutes in Monday’s 85-72 loss at Iowa State.

Perry Ellis led the starters with 36 minutes, followed by Devonté Graham (35), Frank Mason III (32), Wayne Selden, Jr. (30) and Landen Lucas (21).

Off the bench, Brannen Greene played 24 minutes, Jamari Traylor 10, Carlton Bragg, Jr., 6, Cheick Diallo 4, while Lagerald Vick and Svi Mykhailiuk entered for the final minute.

Self was asked if he felt maybe his guys ran out of gas in a second half in which ISU rolled, 49-29, in its victory.

“Well, they may have gotten tired. When the game is going tough like that, it’s hard to put those guys in who have never been in that situation when the game is on the line,” Self said.

Watch list: KU junior guard Selden has been named to the midseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which recognizes the men’s national player of the year, the United States Basketball Writers Association announced Monday.

Selden, 6-5 from Roxbury, Mass., is one of 20 named to the watch list.

Others from the Big 12 on the list: Monté Morris and Georges Niang, of Iowa State, and Buddy Hield, of Oklahoma.

The Oscar Robertson Trophy will be presented at the College Basketball Awards gala on April 11 in Oklahoma City. The USBWA, made up of nearly 1,000 sports journalists covering college basketball for newspapers, magazines and websites, will select the recipient of the award.
