40 years ago: KU basketball player suffers gunshot wound to knee

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 19, 1976:

  • Responsibility for the release of information about the shooting of Kansas University basketball player Reuben Shelton, 21, had shifted away from the KU sports information office to the Douglas County Attorney’s office. County Attorney David Berkowitz said today he was not sure why the responsibility had been shifted and that he had no new information on the progress of the case. Shelton had suffered a gunshot wound to the left knee Jan. 11 when, according to a police report, he had accepted a ride from a stranger who had arrived at Shelton’s home to take him to Kansas City where, the stranger said, Shelton’s sister was hospitalized. After agreeing to the ride, Shelton said, the man had driven him a short distance before forcing him from the car and firing at him. KU officials said the wound was likely to keep Shelton from the basketball court for the rest of the season.
  • Local residents were greeted by raw winter weather this morning, with lows in the teens and northerly winds at 10-25 miles per hour. Snow flurries from the fast-moving cold front were melting quickly, leaving streets slick but the ground bare.
