Veritas girls hound BSA

Playing in a full-court press, Veritas Christian’s girls basketball team makes full use of its lineup filled with quick and athletic guards.

The Eagles trap ball-handlers along the sidelines, fill passing lanes and speed up their opponents to an uncomfortable pace. Once they cause turnovers, they quickly race to the offensive end to turn them into points.

The defensive pressure worked like a charm against Bishop Seabury Academy, and the Eagles cruised to a 63-42 victory on Friday at Corpus Christi.

In the first seven minutes, the Eagles raced to a 19-2 lead by forcing six turnovers and turning them into layups. Starters Nefetiti Shepherd, Alyssa Krestan, Chloe Holland and Tori Huslig each finished with multiple steals.

“It’s very difficult to counter speed,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “When we have good speed on the floor, it creates a lot of opportunities for us to get a lot of steals and easy looks at the basket. That’s what we want.”

The Seahawks (2-2) took time to adjust to the full-court pressure before their offense found a rhythm. Senior guard Regan Zaremba scored a game-high 19 points, driving to the rim for layups and knocking down a pair of threes. Junior Kayleigh Boos added 11 points and eight rebounds, and junior guard Celia Taylor-Puckett had eight points and six rebounds.

However, the Eagles (6-3) never slowed down after their quick start. After the Seahawks pulled within 11 points in the second quarter, Veritas never let the score get any closer.

Despite the early 17-point lead, the Eagles never wanted to allow their in-town rivals to pick up any momentum for a potential comeback.

“You can’t let up on Seabury,” said Holland, who scored a team-high 16 points. “They are a good, aggressive team. It was great to get that lead.”
