Volunteer opportunities: Give young readers a hand

The United Way of Douglas County brings community resources together to support a better life for all residents, focusing efforts on health, self-sufficiency and education. The United Way is in need of volunteers to transport donated/purchased books from the United Way Building to partner schools in Douglas County. Books are distributed weekly during the school year. Responsibilities include: assisting with boxing up of books for each school, delivering books in a timely and courteous manner, retrieving empty bins and returning the bins to the United Way Building, and assisting with moving and sorting books at the United Way. Volunteers must have personal email or text access, their own transportation, a valid driver’s license and liability insurance. Lawrence Memorial Hospital is looking for energetic and customer service-oriented people who are willing to be a part of the caring team of health care providers. Lend a helpful hand to patients, visitors, fellow volunteers and staff members, by volunteering at the following opportunities. Clerical volunteers are needed in several departments to assist with filing, faxing, scanning, reminder phone calls and computer work. The Main Hospital at 325 Maine St. needs volunteers in a variety of opportunities — from greeting visitors and patients, walking visitors to their hospital destinations, transporting patients by wheelchair, helping in the gift shop and Mario’s Closet, assisting with the admissions desks, and helping in the surgery waiting area. Training is provided. Openings are at various times/days of the week. Mentor pets

The Lawrence Humane Society needs volunteers to assist with their Adoption Ambassador program. Adoption Ambassadors care for an animal in their own home and receive training on strategies and resources to promote the animal for adoption and process the adoption on behalf of Lawrence Humane Society. Deliver meals

Lawrence Meals on Wheels provides hot, nutritious meals to the homebound elderly and/or disabled residents of Lawrence. Lawrence Meals on Wheels needs regular weekly drivers for lunchtime meal delivery. Delivery is during the lunch hour, 11:15 a.m. 12:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Routes generally take less than an hour to deliver to six to eight homes. This is a great opportunity for families with young children. Clients love to see kids when their meals are dropped off. This opportunity also works well for business folks who want to take a break during the week during their lunch hour to do something meaningful for others. Join the army

The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to assist at its front desk. Their lobby is full every day with individuals who are in need of assistance. Volunteers are needed to help answer the phone, do pantry sign-in, and help the organization of the office. Basic computer and data entry experience needed. Think global

Ten Thousand Villages-Lawrence is a nonprofit, volunteer-operated, fair-trade retailer of artisan products from about 40 developing countries around the world. Ten Thousand Villages creates opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to market through long-term, fair-trading relationships. Volunteers are needed to work as sales associates and in the stockroom at their retail store in downtown Lawrence. A minimum time commitment of working two four-hour shifts per month is required.
