Notebook: Jayhawks ‘made everything’ early to set up rout

On Saturday, Kansas set itself up for a 102-74 thumping of Baylor at Allen Fieldhouse by making six threes in the opening seven minutes, allowing the Jayhawks to get out to a 24-4 lead.

Wayne Selden, Jr., scored 24 points, one off a career high, while Devonté Graham tied a season high with 15 points, off 6-of-8 shooting. Graham had two threes in that early blitz.

Perry Ellis had 17 points and six boards.

“We were knocking down shots and getting stops defensively. That was a good lead for us,” Ellis said. “Baylor got back into the game a little bit (cutting margin to 12 at one point) but we continued to fight and got the lead up even more.”

“We were so good the first eight to 10 minutes,” Self said. “We made everything and got easy baskets and played with energy. We puttered around to finish the half. Then I thought we finished the game great. It was a great first 10 minutes and great last 10 minutes. We played even the middle 10 minutes. Everyone contributed. Wayne was fabulous, unbelievable.”

He’s OK: KU junior Brannen Greene, who had eight points in 18 minutes, was in great pain late in Saturday’s game after getting hit in the arm.

“It was my funny bone, I think. I’m fine,” Greene said after the contest.

Mickelson shines: Hunter Mickelson had seven points, six boards and three blocks in 17 minutes.

“He was active. His length bothers people,” Self said. “All our bigs contributed and did some good things, all six. I felt Hunter today was the best he’s played as a starter in the minutes he’s got.”

Carlton Bragg had six points and three boards in 10 minutes; Cheick Diallo had four points and two boards in six minutes.

“The video was great. It’s the first time I’ve seen a video like that,” said Frank Mason III. “They did a great job of putting that together. Definitely with the energy in the gym, it got us pumped and ready to play.”

This, that: KU has won 25 straight conference openers. … KU has won 31 in a row in Allen and six straight vs. Baylor. … It marked KU’s first 100-point scoring effort in Big 12 play since scoring 108 at Iowa State (2/25) in 2013. … The Jayhawks went 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from three. The 11 treys were the most in a conference game since 11 in an overtime game against West Virginia on March 2, 2013. … Selden had 18 points the first half. His high in a half is 19 last season against Iowa State.
