Lawrence police report a busy New Year’s Eve but no grave incidents

Lawrence police responded to numerous disturbances across the city on New Year’s Eve and in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day, but none resulting in critical injuries.

Friday morning, officers were still busy finishing reports from the midnight shift, said Lawrence police Sgt. Troy Squire.

He said there were “a lot” of disturbances and that officers made eight arrests for DUI and OUI.

One man was punched and rendered unconscious during a brief altercation with two other men about 2 a.m. Friday in the 700 block of Massachusetts Street, Squire said. The victim was taken to the hospital but did regain consciousness and was able to talk to officers, he said.

Another altercation downtown involved a brief police foot chase.

Police responded to a fight between two men about 3:45 a.m. in the 900 block of Massachusetts, Squire said. He said one man ran as officers approached but that police caught and arrested him on charges of battery and interfering with duties of a law enforcement officer.
