40 years ago: Grease fire damages Lawrence apartment

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 29, 1976:

  • One unit of an apartment complex at 2549 Redbud was severely damaged by an overnight fire. Fire department officials attributed the cause of the blaze to a deep-fryer that had been left on. Grease in the fryer had ignited, setting the kitchen ablaze and spreading to other parts of the apartment, which sustained damage estimated at $10,000.
  • A record high temperature of 73 degrees was recorded this week in Lawrence, as hot weather settled in after a brief weekend bout with a winter storm. The 73-degree reading had broken a 58-year-old record of 72 for that date, and the National Weather Service was predicting more warmth this week.
  • Whitey Herzog, manager of the Kansas City Royals baseball team, was expected in town this week to address a Boys’ Club of Lawrence banquet. Herzog was scheduled as the featured speaker at the second annual club awards banquet at the Kansas Union Ballroom.
