40 years ago: Funding approved for new Haskell dorm

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 27, 1976:

  • After a three-month funding battle, the Bureau of Indian Affairs today approved plans for the construction of a new dormitory at Haskell Indian Junior College. The BIA’s regional office at Albuquerque, N.M., had approved a bid by a Wichita company for construction of a 128-student dorm at a cost of $1,973,000. Frank Quiring, dean of students, said new dorm construction would not enable Haskell to expand enrollment, but would cut crowding in present facilities.
  • An environmental impact statement on Clinton Parkway had received basic approval by the Federal Highway Administration and the project was on schedule, an official told city had county commissioners here this week. Robert Crow, district engineer with the agency, had met with commissioners and state officials for a 90-minute briefing on the 4.1-mile parkway project. City and county commissioners also reached tentative agreement after the session on how to share the costs of buying rights-of-way for the project.
