25 years ago: Archbishop encourages building of second Catholic school in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 25, 1991:

  • Archbishop Ignatius Strecker of the Kansas City, Kansas, Catholic archdiocese this month strongly encouraged Lawrence’s Corpus Christi church to pursue its plans to build an elementary school. However, funding for the project was not currently available, according to the Rev. Frank Horvat, pastor at the church, then located at 1100 Kasold Drive. Archbishop Strecker had met with members of the church’s building committee on Feb. 15 and encouraged the church to continue planning for both a new church building and an elementary school. Sister Elizabeth Youngs, principal at St. John School, said she was excited about the prospect of another Catholic school in Lawrence, adding that St. John was very close to its capacity enrollment of 322.
  • A Kansas House Appropriations subcommittee voted today to increase tuition at Kansas University 8 percent for state residents and 20 percent for non-residents, starting this fall. In its recommendation, the subcommittee was boosting the tuition increase proposed by the Kansas Board of Regents for the 1991-92 academic year, which had been 3 percent and 10 percent for residents and non-residents, respectively. Rep. Robert Vancrum, R-Overland Park, said tuition needed to be raised to bolster the state treasury.
