Topeka ? Free State’s Jordan Portela was top qualifier in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly to lead city swimmers at the Class 6A state swimming and diving meet during preliminary rounds Friday at the Capitol Federal Natatorium.

Free State also had two second-place qualifiers: Evan Yoder, in the 200 individual medley, and Evan Eskilson in the 100 back.

Other FSHS championship-final qualifiers: Eskilson, fourth, 100 fly; Yoder, seventh, in the 100 breast; and all three Free State relays — third in the 200 medley and 400 free, and seventh in the 200 free.

Lawrence High’s Stephen Johnson qualified fourth in the 200 free and sixth in the 500 free. LHS also qualified seventh in the 400 free relay.

In Friday’s diving semifinals, Free State’s Chad Bourdon is in third place with 307.35 points, Skylar Eklund is 13th at 248.10, and Izaiah Bowie is 14th with 242.50.

Mill Valley’s Mitch Willoughby is in first.

Swimming and diving finals will begin at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
