Jayhawk softball earns split in Florida

? The Kansas softball team bounced back from a season-opening loss by blasting host Jacksonville, 9-0, in five innings on Friday.

The shortened contest marks the first run-rule game for the Jayhawks this season and the shutout victory improves KU to 1-1 on the season.

The Jayhawks scored single runs in the first three innings, the run in the second coming off a home run by Lily Behrmann.

Daniella Chavez and Jessie Roane had three RBIs each to give KU it’s nine-run margin.

Sophomore transfer Andie Formby threw a one-hitter for the win.

“In the first game we played a really good team and a good pitcher, who threw an extremely good game,” said head coach Megan Smith. “It was our first game of the year and we had some bright spots, but didn’t quite put it all together. We came back this last game and everything came together, our offense was in an attack mindset, in the first game not so much. Our mindset was more aggressive in the second game and that’s how we want to be.”

In the season opener, KU fell to North Carolina State, 3-1.

In the loss to North Carolina State, KU’s Alexis Reid homered in the seventh inning to break up a no-hitter.

Jessie Roane followed Reid’s home run with a single, but N.C. State thwarted the Jayhawks’ rally.

N.C. State scored once in the third inning and twice in the fourth off Reid (0-1).
