100 years ago: Court room not the place for napping

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 11, 1916:

  • “The interest in the present term of court has been so great that the court officers have had to be on the alert all the time to prevent disturbances…. During the earlier part of the session the warm court room presented a restful place for many of the idle weary who slept in profound indifference to the proceedings of the court, slept until their snoring disturbed the bailiff’s sense of right and wrong and the slumberers were rudely awakened.”
  • “Superintendent Hawley is a great lover of the wild creatures and gives his hearty backing to the ‘feed the birds’ idea. A box of broken corn in the window of his office insures him the company of his feathered friends a great part of the day. The birds are found to be unusually bold on account of the hunger lately experienced.”
  • “Just has he boarded a car for the University last night, John Ehart of Eudora was taken suddenly ill. The car was stopped immediately and Ehart was carried into the Hess Drug store and Dr. Rudolph called. The young man was unconscious when the doctor arrived but after a half hour’s treatment his condition was greatly improved. Ehart was the star of the Eudora high school who had a game scheduled with the Oread high school and was on his way to Robinson gymnasium when taken ill.”
  • “The cold weather did not, as was hoped, kill the canker worm. Indications of this fact were to be observed on every hand today, said Prof. S. J. Hunter, head of the department of entomology at the University. The moths which lay the eggs from which the canker worm is produced are swarming out of the ground since the weather grew warmer. Prompt action in banding the elm trees will still save them from the worms, Professor Hunter said today, but if the bands are not put on right away the moths will have found their way up the trees and then banding will be useless.”
  • “In order to accommodate the people in the south part of town who wish to attend early Sunday services, a slight change in service has been made by the street car company. A car will leave the south part of town at 9:10 o’clock Sunday morning. This will enable many of those who live too far from their church to walk to arrive at Sunday school services on time for the opening at 9:30. This service has been established to ascertain the extent it is needed and may become permanent.”
  • “The members of the Democratic County Central committee have been asked to meet at the court house tomorrow, Saturday, to organize for work and to get into shape to make a winning fight this fall. All has not been serene in the Democratic camp the past few years and leading Democrats hope that all unpleasantness may be wiped out for the good of the party.”
  • “The actual construction of the piers of the Kansas River bridge will commence at once. The cars of steel which have been on the tracks were unloaded today and the interurban will commence immediately to haul rock for the concrete.”
  • “The city of Eudora will vote March 8 on a proposition to sell $10,000 for the purpose of supplying the town with electric current. It is expected that the current will be secured from the interurban line. The special election to vote on the bond proposition was voted by the city council last week.”
