Creighton ‘the right fit’ for Eudora junior Ballock

Eudora sophomore Mitchell Ballock shoots over Tonganoxie senior Jared Sommers (12) during the first round of the Tonganoxie Invitational Tuesday in Tonganoxie.

After his third unofficial visit to Creighton University in the past three years over the weekend, Eudora High junior Mitchell Ballock had seen enough and knew it was where he wanted to play college basketball.

Ballock, a 6-foot-5 combo guard, orally committed to Creighton on Sunday night, making the announcement with a tweet during the Super Bowl. He made his decision one day after watching the Blue Jays beat DePaul.

“I’m pretty happy to just get it out of the way,” Ballock said. “I just felt like it was the right fit for me. A good program, a good coaching staff, players are cool, the community is nice. It’s just a nice atmosphere there.”

Ballock, a left-handed sharpshooter ranked No. 37 in the nation in the Class of 2017 by Rivals.com, chose the Blue Jays over offers from Kansas University, Kansas State, Iowa State and Oklahoma, among several others.

Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising Ballock committed early. When it comes to basketball, he has always had a jump on his peers.

He started dunking in the sixth grade. He scored 40 points in his varsity debut, later winning his school’s first-ever Class 4A-II state title. Creighton offered Ballock a scholarship — his first one — in the summer before his freshman year.

“They play the way I want to play,” Ballock said of Creighton. “They run in transition and shoot open shots. They shoot quick, and they get back. They just run-and-gun and let-it-fly kind of style. I like that.”

Throughout his recruitment, Ballock has always insisted he would pick the school that was the “right fit.” That includes turning down KU, despite making countless unofficial visits to watch the Jayhawks in the last few seasons.

Ballock received an offer from Kansas in August 2014 — the same night as his parents’ 30th wedding anniversary. He called Kansas “one of the best programs ever in the history of basketball,” but he’s happy with his choice to play in Omaha.

“It was tough to tell coach (Bill) Self and coach (Norm) Roberts no because they are right up the road,” Ballock said. “They’re obviously a high-level program every year. But I just think I made the right decision — the best decision for myself — so I’m going to roll with it.”

Ballock averaged 20 points, six rebounds and three assists per game last year, earning first- team all-state honors.

He hasn’t played this season after undergoing surgery for a torn labrum in September. He said he expects to be cleared by his doctor for full contact on Feb. 20 and hopes he can make his season debut on Feb. 23 against Ottawa in Eudora’s regular-season finale.

“I’m just doing shooting on the side, doing the defensive stuff, running and all that — everything non-contact,” he said. “I’m doing all that. Hopefully (cleared) the 20th and see how it feels. Then we’ll go from there.”

At the beginning of his rehab, Ballock could only attempt about 100 shots a day before his shoulder would get tired. A gym rat, Ballock did his best to follow his doctor’s advice.

After some long months, he’s excited about his potential return to the court, especially now that he doesn’t have to worry about recruiting.

“I enjoyed everything about the process,” Ballock said. “I’m blessed to have the opportunities that I had and just see the places I saw and take the visits I took. I’m thrilled to finally make a decision, run with it and hopefully have a good four years at Creighton.”
