Firebird Venters sets school mark in 1,600 meters

? One week after a historic run in the 3,200 meters, Free State High junior Emily Venters broke another school record in the 1,600 meters and ran the 13th-fastest time in state history during the Topeka Seaman Relays on Friday.

Venters finished second in the 1,600 meters in 4:56.76, breaking the school record set by Bailey Sullivan in 2014 (4:59.43). Shawnee Mission Northwest sophomore Molly Born won the race in 4:50.87, the fourth-fastest time in state history.

In the boys 1,600 meters, FSHS seniors Ethan Donley and Tanner Hockenbury finished second and third, respectively.

Lawrence High senior JD Woods won the boys 100-meter dash in a personal-best 10.66 seconds, the fastest time recorded in the state this season. LHS senior Amani Bledsoe won the boys shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 7.5 inches, and senior Caroline Dykes won the girls high jump, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches.

The Lions took 11th in the boys team standings and the girls were 15th. Free State finished 12th on the girls’ side and 14th with the boys.

Both schools will compete in the SM North Relays at 3 p.m. Friday.
