Lawrence Police Department to conduct sobriety checkpoint Friday

In this file photo from Dec. 29, 2011, a car approaches a sobriety checkpoint set up along a busy street in Albuquerque, N.M.

In an effort to reduce Kansas’ annual average of 150 fatal accidents involving impaired drivers, police will stage a sobriety checkpoint in Lawrence on Friday, Lawrence Police Sgt. Amy Rhoads said in a news release.

Officers will be positioned at a predetermined location, which will not be disclosed, Rhoads said. They will be looking for any drivers who appear unsafe or impaired.

The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Correction: A previous version of this story referred to multiple checkpoints. Officers will stage a checkpoint in only one location.
