Stilwell ? Free State High’s Hannah Walter and Callie Hicks earned respective first-place finishes in the shot put and pole vault to help the Firebirds take fifth as a team at the Blue Valley Relays, Friday.

Walter won the shot put with a mark of 35 feet, 7.5 inches, while Hicks cleared 10 feet, 9 inches to bring home gold in the pole vault.

“It was a good start to the early season,” Hicks said. “I had higher expectations for myself, but altogether winning the meet was exciting.”

Hicks was also a part of the Firebirds’ 4×100-meter relay team that took third place with a time of 53.08. The Free State senior was joined by Cameryn Thomas, Emma Barberena and Alauna Hawkins.

Thomas rounded out the top-three finishes for the Firebirds by placing third in long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 9.5 inches.

Ethan Donley paced the FSHS boys, as he was victorious in the 1600. Donley clocked in at 4:29.44 to edge St. Thomas Aquinas junior Alex Gill by .84 seconds.

Donley’s distance partner-in-crime Tanner Hockenbury had a breakout performance in the 3200 — clocking in at 9:33.97 to finish third behind Shawnee Mission North brothers Belesti and Alex Akalu.

“It was a huge PR,” Hockenbury said. “My last PR was 9:47, so I crushed it.”

The final top-three finish for the Free State boys came from the 4×100-meter team of Nate Thomas, Jordan Patrick, Tommy Jacobs and Ronald White. The Firebird foursome finished with a time of 44.80.

The Free State boys placed seventh in the team standings with 54 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas won the meet on both sides.
