Investigators identify victim of house fire in East Lawrence

Firefighters respond to a house fire at 923 Pennsylvania St., Thursday afternoon, March 31, 2016.

Investigators have identified the man killed in a Thursday afternoon house fire in East Lawrence.

Joe Dotson, 61, was killed in the incident, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Division Chief Eve Tolefree said in a release.

Lawrence resident Joe Dotson, seen in this 2008 Journal-World file photo, died in a fire Thursday at his Pennsylvania Street home. Dotson was frequently seen bicycling on the streets of East Lawrence, where he lived. In this photo, he was carrying his groceries on his head because his bike didn't have a basket.

Emergency responders were dispatched to a home at 2:49 p.m. Thursday at 923 Pennsylvania St., where they found a man — later identified as Dotson — partially inside, Tolefree said Thursday. Dotson was pulled away from the fire, but was declared dead shortly afterward, she said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the release said.

Another Lawrence man, Fernando Alvarez, died early Wednesday morning in an unrelated house fire at 2632 Rawhide Lane.

Investigators determined that fire was set intentionally following a report of a domestic dispute and estimated damage to the home at $264,000.
