Weekend Guide: Banned Books Trading Cards unveiling; United Way crafting event; St. John’s Oktoberfest; Festival of Cultures; ‘Dance Princess Dance’

Weekend Guide for Friday, Sept. 25, 2015.

Among this weekend’s highlights: pirouetting princesses, cultural immersion and books — both of the banned and recycled variety.

Banned Book Trading Cards reveal

6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St.

In honor of Banned Books Week (Sunday through Oct. 3), the Lawrence Public Library is revealing a new set of Banned Book Trading Cards this weekend.

The seven winning cards were chosen from a pool of work submitted by local artists, and will be unveiled on the library’s grand staircase by “none other than the enigmatic Jay Gatsby,” the library promises.

Does that mean we’ll see F. Scott Fitzgerald’s frequently challenged classic immortalized in a trading card? All will be revealed soon.

United Way of Douglas County Next Chapter Crafts Event

1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, United Way Center, 2518 Ridge Court #200

The United Way is inviting the public to craft for a cause this weekend. At Saturday’s free event, crafters of all ages and skill levels can repurpose old books into magnets, bookmarks and journals.

All completed projects will be sold to benefit the Brain Food Book program, which helps at-risk kids served by the United Way’s Education Goal.

Registration is required to attend. Register and learn more about volunteering at www.volunteerdouglascounty.org.

St. John’s Oktoberfest

4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Kentucky St.

Bust out those lederhosen and dirndls: St. John’s 19th annual Oktoberfest returns to Lawrence on Saturday, bringing with it live music, dancing, children’s activities and, of course, authentic German food and beer.

This year’s menu includes schnitzel, bierocks, bratwursts, cabbage rolls, hot dogs, sauerkraut and German potato salad. Paulaner Hefe-Weizen, Free State Brewing Co. Octoberfest, Angry Orchard Hard Cider and gluhwein (a German spiced wine) are among the libations.

The church is also hosting a polka Mass at 4:30 p.m.

Festival of Cultures

Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, South Park

Celebrate the “diversity of cultures” in Lawrence with live music, dance, activities, games, crafts and homemade food at the Festival of Cultures.

Latin American countries have traditionally had a strong presence at the festival, though in previous years booths have ladled out Native American and Nigerian foods, among others.

The festival is free to attend, but refreshments will cost you extra.

Dance Princess Dance

Five performances on Sunday, Castle Tea Room, 1307 Massachusetts St.

“Perfect for aspiring princesses of all ages,” this third annual show by Lawrence’s AIM Dance Company will take guests on a journey through the Castle Tea Room, or simply the “castle,” in this case. Each stop in the six rooms of the castle reveals a new princess dancing to “her favorite melody.”

Performances are at noon, 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Sunday, each lasting 30 minutes. Tickets cost $8, and reservations are required. To snag your spot, visit www.facebook.com/pointbdance.
