LHS tennis falls to Manhattan

Lawrence High’s girls tennis team dropped a match to Manhattan Thursday, 5-4.

The difference came in a doubles match decided by tiebreaker.

“It came down to that tiebreaker, and we just didn’t get it done,” said LHS coach Chris Marshall. “We had some girls who normally play doubles getting some of their first experience playing singles.”

Marshall singled out the play of Payton Smith and Betsy Smoot.

“I was really pleased with the way Payton and Betsy stepped up,” he said.

Lawrence’s Caroline Baloga also won in singles.

Smith combined with Erin Ventura for the Lions’ lone doubles win.

Marshall was also happy with his junior varsity players Thursday after they took second at the Sunflower League tournament.
