40 years ago: Overheated light causes blaze in downtown sign shop

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 23, 1975:

  • An overheated spotlight in the shop’s back workroom ignited a $23,000 fire overnight at the Art and Sign Shop, 619 Vermont. Five trucks and about 35 firefighters had gathered on Vermont and in the alley behind the shop, working for 30 minutes to get the blaze under control. The alarm had been turned in shortly before midnight by passersby who had beaten on the door of Fire Station No. 1, 745 Vermont, to attract the attention of the sleeping firemen. Bob Treanor, the shop’s owner, was not available for comment this morning, but workers said they believed the shop would be open as usual while cleanup was completed.
  • Summer departed without fanfare at 10:55 this morning, bringing crisp fall temperatures to the area. The scorching hot weather of August and early September had vanished, leaving behind a modest high of 71 and overnight lows dipping to 48 degrees.
