Lawrence sees nearly an inch of rain Monday

Almost a full inch of rain — .94 inches — fell in Lawrence on Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Crystal Miles, horticulture manager with Lawrence Parks and Recreation, said the city received 11 reports of wind damage and tree limbs down, some on roads and some still hanging from trees.

“We worked pretty much all day (Tuesday) to get those 11 calls taken care of and get the streets opened, and all the hangers down,” Miles said.

Bryan Baerg, an intern with the NWS, said the 1.15-inch rain total so far for the month of September is just slightly below the average of 1.22 inches.

Wind gusts Monday reached speeds of 42 mph with an average wind speed of 10.8 mph.

Baerg said Tuesday evening that the NWS forecasts a 50 percent chance of rain on Thursday evening going into Friday.

Baerg said he did not receive any reports of lightning strikes other than the one that split a 100-year-old pine oak early Monday in the 1700 block of Mississippi Street.
