Flash flood warning until 12:45 a.m.; weather leads to accident on I-70

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a flash flood warning for northwestern Douglas County and southeastern Jefferson County until 12:45 a.m.

The NWS said in a statement that Doppler radar is tracking a strong thunderstorm producing heavy rain across the area. Already 3 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in these areas that include Lawrence, Perry, Lecompton, Williamstown and Clinton Lake.

The Kansas Turnpike also is included in the warning between mile markers 189 and 205.

The weather service advises residents to monitor local radio and TV stations for immediate additional weather information and warnings.

Lawrence emergency workers were trying to rescue several occupants of a car that rolled over while driving in Interstate 70 near mile-marker 198, Lawrence police dispatched said. No other information was immediately available.

Several noninjury accidents have been reported on the scanner as a result of drivers leaving the roadway in more rural areas of the county.

As of 10 p.m., 713 customers were without power in Lawrence, according to Westar Energy.
