40 years ago: Recommendations made for KU teaching assistants

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 7, 1975:

Selection, training, and removal policies for graduate teaching assistants and assistant instructors at Kansas University were in need of alteration to improve teaching quality, according to a report released this week by the KU Student Senate. The proposals on TAs and AIs were among 16 suggestions contained in the report and included recommendations for personal interviews when possible, selection of TAs and AIs by a committee of three faculty members, evaluation twice a semester, videotaping of classes for self-evaluation, and the restriction of hiring to students showing a “high proficiency” in English. The report also recommended tuition fee waivers for graduate student instructors and a clear definition of whether assistant instructors were teachers or students.
