City to hold compost and woodchip sale

The city of Lawrence Solid Waste Division will hold a compost and woodchip sale event for citizens this week.

The sale will be held rain or shine from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day Thursday through Saturday at the Wood Recovery and Composting Facility, 1420 E. 11th St.

The compost, meant to be mixed into soil, comes from weekly yard waste collections. According to a news release from the city, 99 percent of all chemicals in it dissipate through the composting process.

The woodchips, made from brush and tree debris, are used to cover soil. According to the release, woodchips help conserve water by reducing evaporation from soil.

Compost and woodchips will cost $10 per bucket load equivalent to 2 cubic yards. Only cash will be accepted. Small self-loading quantities, such as small bags or totes, are free.

The release asks that people bring a tarp to secure woodchips in trucks and trailers.
