Lions shoot often, not often on target in 3-2 loss

LHS senior Piper Hubbell (#14) pushes off Leavenworth's Gary Schmidt (#0) for ball control Tuesday night at LHS

Lawrence High’s boys soccer players walked off of the field on Tuesday in disbelief, putting their hands over their heads.

Despite owning a huge advantage in shots and time of possession, the Lions paid for their mistakes in a 3-2 loss to Leavenworth, spoiling the Lions’ Senior Night at LHS.

With the score tied, 2-2, at halftime, the Lions outshot the Pioneers, 18-1, in the second half and only allowed Leavenworth past midfield a handful of times.

But Leavenworth’s one shot was the only one that counted on the scoreboard. Leavenworth junior Victor Loredo received a pass on the right side of the field after the Lions overloaded the left side, which gave Loredo open space and he scored on a strike from about 20 yards away with less than six minutes remaining.

The Lions (3-9-1) had a couple of more chances at the net in the final minutes on shots from senior Piper Hubbell and junior Cain Scott but none of them could get past Leavenworth’s goalie Joseph Ativie.

“You keep giving the other team confidence, then all of sudden you’re in a battle,” LHS coach Mike Murphy said. “It’s just a matter of which team is going to take advantage of a mistake. They took advantage of a mistake and we just couldn’t create enough in the attacking third.”

The Lions started all of their seven seniors but had a lack of energy in the first 20 minutes, struggling to put shots on goal, despite numerous chances in the attacking third.

In the 17th minute, Leavenworth had an indirect free kick in the 18-yard box and LHS senior goalie Jeremiah Barbe made two tough stops. However, the Pioneers took advantage of a corner kick less than a minute later and knocked a shot into the back of the net.

Leavenworth took a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute when Barbe collided with an LHS defender in an attempt to grab the ball and it gave Leavenworth sophomore Justis Simon a wide-open dribble into the box and shot into the net.

“A lack of effort and a lack of focus in that first 20 (minutes),” Murphy said. “It’s really hard when you come out flat to get it back. It’s really hard. Missed a lot of shots. Missed a lot of opportunities.”

After falling behind by two goals, the Lions finally rebounded with two goals in the final six minute of the first half — both by junior attacker Ebrahim Diagne on the result of corner kicks. His first goal was assisted by senior midfielder Brennan Davies.

However, the Lions couldn’t find the back of the net afterward despite owning a 19-5 advantage on shots on net, along with 11 corner kicks.

Seniors Hubbell, Davies, Hunter Jewell, Matt Ramaley and sophomore Quentin Harrington all had shots near the box that went wide or over the net. Diagne even added a shot off of the right post.

“It’s just a lack of finishing and that’s kind of been our problem all year is just goals,” Davies said. “We can’t find somebody we can rely on to score goals. That’s been Ebrahim, but he can only do so much.”

Murphy added: “Our guys were trying to do things themselves instead of doing things as a team. That’s not going to get it done.”

The Lions will travel to No. 1-ranked Olathe East at 7 p.m. Thursday at CBAC.
