40 years ago: KU dorm rates set to increase

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 12, 1975:

  • Kansas University officials were planning to ask the Kansas Board of Regents later this fall for permission to raise dormitory fees at KU in the next year. The increases, expected to be approved by the regents, would raise the cost of a double room from $1,130 to $1,225, with the single room fee rising from $1,430 to $1,550. These were only base fees; some dorms, such as Hashinger, required a further premium of up to $55. William Balfour, vice chancellor for student affairs, said increases in food, utility and maintenance costs had forced KU’s contract coordinating board to recommend the increases to the housing board, which had approved them Friday.
  • Mrs. Donald Norris, 755 Locust, reported this week that she had dug up a 5-3/4 pound sweet potato from her garden recently. The potato had sprung from a plant given her by a grandson.
