40 years ago: KU dedicates German library to former professor

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 7, 1975:

Kansas University honored one of its “great builders” this week, dedicating a special library of German books and other materials in Wescoe Hall to the memory of Elmer Engel, a distinguished professor of German at KU for 49 years until his death in 1958. “During his years as a teacher, Dr. Engel taught more than 5,000 KU students,” KU Chancellor Archie Dykes told a gathering of 75 people at the dedication. “He received national and worldwide recognition for the laboratory method of teaching German which he developed from 10 years of research.” The library, containing about 1,000 volumes as well as periodicals and recordings of German music, was a gift from the Engel family.
