Lane of southbound Kansas River Bridge to close for three days in early December

One lane of the Kansas River Bridge heading south into downtown Lawrence will be closed off for a few days in early December, officials said.

The lane of southbound traffic crossing the Kansas River at Vermont Street will close from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 1 through Dec. 3, said Monique Pope, a spokeswoman for Black Hills Energy.

During the closure, one lane of southbound traffic crossing the river will remain open, Pope said. Northbound traffic on the Massachusetts Street portion of the bridge will not be affected.

The closure is meant for gas operations staff to inspect a gas main attached to the underside of the bridge, Pope said. The inspection is required every three years.

Correction: This story has been corrected to reflect that only one lane of the southbound bridge will be closed. The other lane will remain open, and the Massachusetts Street bridge will be unaffected.
