Balanced attack helps KU women hold off Memphis

Kansas University’s women’s basketball team shared the wealth, made sure to get the ball inside and held off the pesky Memphis Tigers for a 72-63 win Thursday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

All nine Jayhawks who played contributed at least two field goals, and with the KU offense turning out so many layups, KU (2-0) scored 46 points in the paint.

Although Memphis’ Ariel Hearn (15 points) and Brianna Wright (15 points) both scored more points than any of the Jayhawks, KU’s balance prevailed.

Freshman Kansas guard Kylee Kopatich led the home team with 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting — capped by a crucial drive and layup that put KU ahead by six with just more than a minute to play.

Junior forward Jada Brown added 10 points, making four of her seven shot attempts. Sophomore guard Lauren Aldridge also put up 10 points.

Junior substitute guard Timeka O’Neal chipped in nine points off the bench by connecting on three of her six three-point tries.

Freshman backup point guard Jayde Christopher passed out four of KU’s 14 assists in the victory against Memphis (2-1).

Freshman forward Tyler Johnson led all players with 10 boards off the bench.

The Jayhawks play their first road game of the season Monday at Arizona.
