Whether you’re dreaming of a white Christmas or lean more toward Scrooge, you’ll easily find something to do in Lawrence this season.

Bizarre Bazaar

Nov. 27 and 28, Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.

Lawrence certainly boasts more than its fair share of arts-and-crafts sales this time of year, but the long-standing Bizarre Bazaar, or “BizBaz,” might be the most popular.

From 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 27 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 28, shoppers can peruse funky and fabulous creations from more than 100 artists. Previous years have also featured live music and baked goods.

Festival of Trees

Nov. 30 through Dec. 3, Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St.

More than 50 trees and nearly 20 wreaths decorated and donated by local groups and individuals will light up Liberty Hall.

For a suggested donation of $3 for folks ages 12 and up, revelers can view the Christmas-y creations throughout the festival. Festivities kick off Nov. 30 (stop by for milk and cookies with Santa that evening) and end Dec. 3, with the annual tree auction taking place Dec. 2.

‘Reckless’

Dec. 4-10, Kansas University’s William Inge Memorial Theatre, 1530 Naismith Drive

Looking for some off-kilter holiday fun? This black comedy from Tony-nominated playwright Craig Lucas takes place on Christmas Eve in suburban Connecticut, where housewife Rachel Fitsimmons has just received some not-so-festive news from her husband: He’s hired an assassin to take her life.

“What follows is a journey of discovery that includes murder, embezzlement, visits to questionable therapists and an appearance on a TV game show,” KU Theatre teases. Oh, and finding the true meaning of Christmas, natch.

‘The Little Mermaid’

Dec. 4-20, Theatre Lawrence, 4660 Bauer Farm Drive

Revisit all your favorite tunes — and those unrealistic hair expectations that only Disney princesses could impart — from childhood with Theatre Lawrence’s production of “The Little Mermaid.”

If you’re somehow not familiar with the original Hans Christian Andersen story (who could forget the tongue mutilation and that bummer ending?) or the 1989 Disney flick upon which the stage musical is based, this family-friendly tale follows a beautiful — yet kind of reckless, let’s be real here — young mermaid who yearns to leave her ocean home and marry a handsome prince.

Other elements include a scary witch named Ursula, anthropomorphic sea creatures and music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County Gingerbread Festival and Auction

Dec. 4-6, Abe and Jake’s Landing, 8 E. Sixth St.

Some of the more elaborate creations — last year’s entries included an edible replica of Munchkinland from “The Wizard of Oz” and a 30-pound gingerbread house inspired by California’s Carson Mansion — for this annual charity event benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters can fetch thousands of dollars.

The main event kicks off at 6 p.m. Dec. 4, with “KC’s best party band,” The Phantastics, providing live entertainment, plus prizes, food, drinks and more. Tickets starts at $50, and can be purchased at gingerbreadauction.com.

If you can’t spare a few crumbs for the auction, there’s still a chance to check out the entries Dec. 5-6 at Abe and Jake’s free of charge. Activities for the weekend also include a pancake feed, cookie decorating, crafts and a Santa meet-and-greet.

KU Holiday Vespers

2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6, Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive

Need a little pre-holiday pick-me-up? The 91st annual KU Holiday Vespers concert, featuring the musical talents of the KU choirs and orchestra, should lift your spirits.

This year’s program features classics such as Bach’s “Magnificat,” “There Shall a Star From Jacob” by Mendelssohn and the Nigerian carol “Betelehemu,” among others. And, as in seasons past, the much-loved audience sing-along.

‘A Kansas Nutcracker: 1856 Herald of Freedom Edition’

Dec. 11-20, Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.

A much-loved Lawrence tradition continues with this year’s staging of “A Kansas Nutcracker.” Since its debut in 2002, the riff on Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet has drawn audiences — and local history buffs — with its reimagining of Bleeding Kansas figures and events.

This season’s production, dubbed “1856 Herald of Freedom Edition,” includes portrayals of John Brown and other famous Lawrencians, as well as historical tidbits such as the Sacking of Lawrence, Pottawatomie and Osawatomie massacres, and how the destroyed Herald of Freedom Printing Press (a casualty of the aforementioned Sacking) was later melted into cannonballs by abolitionists in the Battle of Fort Titus.

History, man — you can’t make this stuff up.

Tickets range from $15 to $21, and can be purchased at lawrenceartscenter.org, in person or by calling 843-2787.

Ashley Davis: The Christmas Sessions

Dec. 16 and 17, Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive

Lawrence native and international recording artist Ashley Davis is coming home for the holidays this year to celebrate the release of her new holiday album, “The Christmas Sessions,” at the Lied Center.

Fans of Celtic Woman and similar acts should appreciate Davis’ genre-bending sound, which has an Irish and Scottish flair but also draws heavily from her Kansas roots and the country music traditions of the Appalachian Mountains.

Tickets cost $20, and can be purchased at lied.ku.edu, in person or by calling 864-2787. Word to the wise: Davis’ holiday performance at the Lied Center sold out pretty quickly last year, so plan accordingly.
