Lawrence man, 36, being held on $1 million bond on rape and other charges after allegedly breaking into several residences

A Lawrence man is being held in the Douglas County Jail on a $1 million bond following allegations of sex crimes and four aggravated burglaries Saturday night in the 800 blocks of Missouri, Maine and Alabama streets.

The man, 36, has been charged with four counts of aggravated burglary, two counts of aggravated sodomy, one count of rape, four counts of aggravated assault and one count of criminal threat.

He was arrested after allegedly entering at least four residences in central Lawrence late Saturday, said Kim Murphree, a spokeswoman for the Lawrence Police Department.

At 10:23 p.m. Saturday, a victim reported that a man wearing a mask and brandishing a gun pushed into a residence through the front door, Murphree said. At 10:30 p.m., police responded to a nearby residence where multiple victims reported the same.

Officers were canvassing the area when they discovered a third residence the suspect had allegedly entered, and at 10:52 p.m. police responded to another residence where the man was taken into custody, Murphree said.

Depending upon the man’s criminal history, if convicted on all counts he could face more than 112 years in prison.

The most severe of the counts — the two aggravated sodomy counts and one rape count, all level one felonies — are punishable by up to 653 months, or more than 54 years, in prison. Two victims were involved, according to court documents. Further details on the circumstances of the alleged sex crimes were not available Monday.

Prior to his arrest, the man was under post-release supervision for a 2011 charge of aggravated battery in Wyandotte County, said Deborah Lynn Moody, Douglas County assistant district attorney. He also had some juvenile offenses on his record, she said.

Moody requested that Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James T. George issue a $1 million bond.

“These are extremely egregious crimes that have been alleged, and we feel that he is a danger to the community,” Moody said.

In the event that the man did manage to make bond, Moody requested that he not be allowed contact with any victims, or to return to the 600-900 blocks of Missouri or Maine streets. He would also be monitored with a GPS device.

When asked if he had any comments about the bond, the man said he “figured it’d be pretty unreasonable.”

Murphree said the man was also arrested on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping and kidnapping. He was not charged with either. The investigation is ongoing.

The man is scheduled for a second court appearance at 2 p.m. Tuesday. George appointed Lawrence attorney Branden Smith to represent the man.
