Library dedicates custom table and chair for longtime advocate, volunteer

This table and chair in the library's Readers Theater was commissioned by Carol Nalbandian's husband, John Nalbandian. They were built by local artist and Kansas University Associate Professor of Design, Tom Huang.

Two new additions to the Lawrence Public Library’s storytimes have been dedicated to a passionate advocate for the organization who died in 2014, the library said in a news release.

Carol Nalbandian, who was a longtime member of the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library volunteer group, died in January 2014. But she left behind a legacy of dedication to both the library and the community.

John Nalbandian, his wife, Carol, both recipients of the 2008 Buford M. Watson Award, at the 2008 Leadership Lawrence Graduation Breakfast April 25 at the Kansas Union.

Her husband, Kansas University Public Affairs and Administration professor emeritus John Nalbandian, commissioned a custom-made table and chair from local artist and KU associate professor of design Tom Huang.

Both pieces were fashioned, in part, by wood from trees harvested in the library’s 2014 expansion project, the release said. They will be housed in the library’s Readers Theater for the facility’s daily storytimes for babies, toddlers and young children.
