Lawrence police: ‘Dumpster diving’ thief flees, drops TV in street

A 44-year-old Lawrence man was charged with aggravated burglary Saturday after attempting to steal a TV in the presence of a homeowner, according to Lawrence police.

About 4:30 a.m. Saturday, police arrested Chad Sarnstrom after he allegedly went into an unlocked home in the 800 block of Michigan Street and attempted to steal the TV, Sgt. David Hogue said. A resident of the home came into the living room and found Sarnstrom holding the TV, Hogue said, prompting Sarnstrom to flee and then drop the TV in the street.

The incident was Sarnstrom’s second encounter with officers Saturday, Hogue said. Earlier that morning, police were called to an apartment complex in the area on reports that Sarnstrom was checking doors to see whether they were locked, Hogue said. Officers discovered several items of value on Sarnstrom, which he claimed he found while “dumpster diving,” Hogue noted. Sarnstrom was issued a citation for trespassing and released, Hogue said.

As of Sunday night, none of the items had been reported missing or claimed, Hogue explained.

Sarnstrom was released Saturday evening from the Douglas County Jail on a $10,000 bond. He was charged with two counts of aggravated burglary and one count of theft in the TV incident, according to the jail booking log.
