Free State’s Bermel, Lions’ Byrn to play in all-star softball game

Free State High senior Emily Bermel and Lawrence High senior Morgan Byrn were both selected to play for Kansas in the MO-KAN high school softball all-star series.

The three-game series will be played on June 15 at the Shawnee Mission District Softball Complex, starting at 5 p.m.

Kansas leads the series 8-6.

Bermel, who has signed to play for Kansas University, was a .479 hitter in her three-year career with the Firebirds, with 113 hits, 84 runs scored, 31 stolen bases and 45 RBIs in 67 games.

Byrn hit .471 this season with a team-high 32 RBI. She also had 24 runs scored, 10 doubles and four home runs, helping the Lions to their first regional victory since 2011.

Byrn will play for UMKC next year.
