Pedestrian hit by vehicle, airlifted from Sixth and Iowa late Thursday night

A pedestrian was taken by air ambulance late Thursday to a Topeka hospital after a vehicle struck him on West Sixth Street, Lawrence police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said Friday.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the 1800 block of West Sixth Street around 11:15 p.m. to a report of a man having been hit by a white Toyota Corolla, Murphree said.

Murphree said that initial reports alleged that the man was walking southbound on West Sixth Street “in front of the Toyota” when a woman driving “westbound on Sixth Street in the inside lane” struck him.

When medics arrived on scene, they found the pedestrian “unconscious, but breathing,” Murphree said. Around 11:30 p.m., a Life Star helicopter landed at nearby Centennial Park.

The helicopter took the injured man to Stormont-Vail in Topeka shortly after midnight.

A condition update was not available Friday morning.
