United Way looking for volunteers at Ballard Community Center

The United Way of Douglas County is looking for volunteers for the upcoming Ballard Community Center project, said Shelly Hornbaker, the organization’s volunteer center coordinator.

The project is part of the organization’s Summer of Service, which offers area youth a productive way to stay busy over the summer, Hornbaker said.

“It’s really a way to give back and interact with community members they don’t have an opportunity to see on a regular basis,” she said.

The Summer of Service begins Monday and runs through July 31, Hornbaker said. Each week the organization hosts another project for volunteers.

The Ballard Community Center Project will run July 6 through 10, from 9 a.m. to noon each day, Hornbaker said. There are still seven open volunteer slots open for anyone over the age of 16.

“Ballard has a community garden, and the kids will be harvesting produce, weeding and planting if there is anything new to plant,” she said. “They’ll also help rehabilitate the preschool’s playground. Tightening bolts on play equipment and things like that.”

Those interested in volunteering can register online at volunteerdouglascounty.org or email Hornbaker at volunteer@unitedwaydgco.org.
