Floodgates on HorseThief Reservoir dam following heavy rain

? Heavy rains this week have caused officials to open the floodgates on the HorseThief Reservoir dam in southwest Kansas for the first time since it was built in 2009.

Manager Joshua Hobbs said the 450-acre lake is nearly full since torrential rains pushed the water level up some 11 feet. He said they received reports of up to 10 inches of rain at locations within the watershed.

“It’s amazing one rainfall can put this much water in,” Hobbs said.

The watershed contains more than 1.5 million acres in parts of nine Kansas counties, including Edwards, Ford, Gray, Hodgeman, Lane, Ness, Pawnee and Rush.
