25 years ago: DCCCA’s growth mirrors societal awareness

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 27, 1990:

An article in today’s Journal-World described the evolution of DCCCA from a small agency with a two-person staff in 1974 to its expanded existence in 1990. Having begun as a store front operation at 729 1/2 Massachusetts with a $25,000 annual budget, the alcohol and drug treatment and prevention agency was now operating programs statewide with a staff of 84 and a yearly budget of $3 million. Bruce Beale, executive director of the agency, said the growth of DCCCA paralleled the timing of the county’s overall awareness of drug and alcohol problems as well as the availability of funding to fight such problems. Beale added that the agency, now headquartered at 2200 W. 25th, had recently bid on a state program for the Department of Corrections to provide evaluation of inmates as they entered the prison system.
