40 years ago: Federal funding approved for Clinton Parkway

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 22, 1975:

Federal funding for Clinton Parkway, totaling $164,500, was approved this week by the Federal Highway Administration and was to be made available immediately, according to division engineer Bob Morrissey, Topeka. Morrissey said the funds represented a 70 percent share of the total estimated cost per preliminary engineering and right of way incidentals. The remaining 30 percent was to be paid locally. Local officials hoped other funds might be made available for right of way acquisition once final design was approved by the federal highway administration. In a meeting this morning, city and county officials favored a compromise on their share of the project costs, with the city paying 40 percent and the county, 60 percent. No official decision had been reached, however, and further discussions were to be held.
